Sim Desktop opens your Sim workspace in a macOS app. It adds a built-in browser, terminal sessions, local file tools, and native notifications. Available builds and deployments can also provide native Mac app control. Your account, workspaces, and workflows are shared with the web app.
Download and requirements
Download Sim Desktop for macOS
The official build is signed and notarized. One universal installer supports Apple Silicon and Intel Macs running macOS 12 Monterey or later. Use the web app on other platforms.
The download link redirects to the latest available desktop installer for that deployment. Results can be cached for five minutes. To install a specific version, download Sim-<version>-universal.dmg from GitHub releases.
You need outbound access to your Sim deployment and GitHub's release downloads. For a self-hosted deployment:
- Use your own download endpoint, such as
https://sim.example.com/api/desktop/update/download. - Allow the Sim server to reach both
api.github.comandgithub.comfor release lookup and manifests. Blocking either can make the download endpoint return502. - Use a certificate trusted by macOS. The app rejects certificate errors without an override; install a private CA in the system trust store if required.
See Desktop app on your deployment for server URLs, update channels, and network troubleshooting.

Browser, terminal, and local files
Browser and Terminal are enabled by default. Turn them off with Let Chat browse the web or Let Chat run commands in their Settings sections.
Local file access
By default, local file tools ask for folder access when they need an unapproved path. A selected-folder grant is scoped to that folder, read-only through the filesystem tool interface, and revocable. Use File → Folder Access… to manage selected folders.
Settings → Account → Desktop → Full file access is off by default. Enabling it lets local file tools access files without individual folder approvals.
Native Mac-app control
Computer Use appears under Settings → Account → Desktop only when the deployment and installed app provide it. It requires macOS 14 or later and is off by default on each Mac. Browser, Terminal, and local file permissions are separate controls.
To enable it when available:
- Open Computer Use and turn Allow Mothership to use Mac apps to On to allow Sim to use native apps.
- Use Open System Settings to grant Accessibility for app interaction and Screen Recording for screenshots. Grant these permissions yourself, then return to Sim to refresh their status.
- When Sim requests an app, choose Allow for This Task, Always Allow, or Cancel. Always Allow saves that app's permission on this Mac.
Sim can read approved app windows and interact through clicks, text, keyboard shortcuts, scrolling, and supported accessibility controls. Screenshots and returned app content can be sent to your Sim deployment and model. Some actions require bringing the app to the foreground; app compatibility and macOS permissions can still limit what succeeds.
The conversation shows the active app and action. Select Stop, or press Cmd + Shift + Escape when that shortcut is available, to cancel active and queued computer actions. Stopping cannot undo input already delivered to an app. Verify the app's current state before repeating an interrupted action.
Use Revoke under Approved apps to remove a saved permission, or switch Computer Use off. Signing out or changing deployments clears the device opt-in and app approvals. Computer Use cannot operate Sim's own permission controls or macOS System Settings.
Terminal access
Terminal commands run with your macOS account's permissions. They can modify files outside selected-folder grants; those grants do not confine the shell. Disable Settings → Account → Terminal → Let Chat run commands to remove this capability.
Command confirmation depends on Chat's tool-permission settings and whether the run is interactive. With approvals enabled, command runs can wait for approval unless the tool is auto-allowed. Noninteractive runs do not wait for a per-command decision.
Settings
Desktop settings appear under Settings → Account when the app exposes the corresponding capability. They apply to this Mac.
Desktop
This section also shows the installed version and a downloaded version waiting for restart.
Browser
Terminal
Use Let Chat run commands to enable or disable Terminal. Theme and Default zoom control its appearance.
The Sim menu also contains Settings…, Server…, Check for Updates…, and Sign Out.
Keyboard shortcuts
The workflow and table shortcuts also work in Desktop. Focus determines whether a shortcut acts on Sim, the browser, or Terminal.
When Browser or Terminal is focused:
The last two shortcuts apply to Browser. With Sim focused, Cmd + L opens Logs.
Updates
The app checks the deployment it is connected to for updates. It does not force a restart during your session.
If the deployment's update feed is unavailable, an eligible stable build falls back to Sim's public GitHub releases. Prerelease builds skip the check instead. See Desktop app on your deployment for feed failures and release selection.
